Redheads Wearing Red Lipstick

Egypt leaves Italy internet:

Confirming what some have reported this afternoon.

In a move unprecedented in the history of the Internet, the Egyptian government seems to have ordered the service providers to close all international Internet connections. Critical optical fiber routes from Europe and Asia passing through Egypt appear to be affected by now. However, each provider in Egypt, all businesses, banks, Internet, website, the embassy of the school and government office based on the four major Internet providers in Egypt for connection is cut for the rest the world. Link Egypt, Vodafone / Raya, Telecom Egypt, Etisalat Misr, and all its clients and partners are so far out of line.

at 22:34 UTC (12:34 a.m. local time), Renesys noted the almost simultaneous withdrawal of all routes to networks of Egypt in the global routing table of the Internet. Approximately 3,500 individual BGP routes are removed, leaving no valid paths by which the world could continue to exchange Internet traffic with service providers in Egypt. Virtually all directions Internet in Egypt are unreachable for everybody.

This is a completely different situation to the handling of Internet modest in Tunis, where specific routes are blocked, or in Iran, where the Internet was limited in a way designed to make the Internet very slow. The Egyptian government's actions this evening have been removed to their country on the world map.

What happens when you disconnect a modern economy and 80 million through Internet? What will happen tomorrow, in the streets and in the credit markets? This has never happened before, and the unknowns accumulate. We will continue to deepen in the event and will update this story as we learn more. Sunrise on Friday in Cairo in this unprecedented media blackout, the Egyptian people keep in their thoughts.
